Hope During the Holidays
By Rev LaKeya Stewart
The holiday season is upon us. For some this is an exciting time of celebration and for others it is a time of grieving and pain. I often wonder how we can celebrate with some in our community while simultaneously grieve with those hurting in our community. I don’t think there is a one size fits all model here.
As believers in Christ, we are called to walk alongside people through the seasons of life. We are called to bear each other’s burdens, we are called to weep with those who weep, but we are also called to rejoice with those that rejoice. It can be emotionally draining to try to be all things to all people, even when we have good intentions. The mere fact that we are humans tells us that we have limitations.
Those that believe in Christ can hope in Christ. This world is temporary. It is full of suffering. Just watching the news and scrolling through social media is enough to get me discouraged. I am encouraged when I am reminded that this is not the end. This world is not my home. I am merely passing through.
I have learned that when I set my desires and affections on Godly things, God gives me peace during even the most difficult of seasons. If you find yourself lonely or grieving during this holiday season, consider being intentional about surrounding yourself with “your community”. If you do not have a “community” per se, I encourage you to find that through a church, a local gym, at a school, or wherever else you might find incredible people.
There is hope for the holidays because we hope in Christ. Life changes and is full of ups and downs, but we have a God that is consistent. He won’t fail us. I want to challenge you to reach out to someone who lives alone and who is struggling this holiday season. Be blessed.
