Kristyn Alexis was first featured in Volume 1 | Issue 2 of the Fort Wayne Ink Spot. This is her follow-up.
When she first profiled in the Fort Wayne Ink Spot’s entrepreneur section (page four back then, page six now), Kristyn Alexis had just crossed over 64,000 YouTube subscribers with a beeline towards her goal of hitting 100,000, a mark she eventually eclipsed in late September/early October 2018. As of the publishing of this issue, her channel (KristynAlexis) is over 120,000.
YouTube dolls out plaques for several subscriber milestones; they look like a diploma with a silver play button in the middle. The 1 million mark and plaque is attainable for her, she said, “but you really have to play the game.” For now, she’s slowing her roll down some and flipping the script on her content.
Kristyn Alexis: I used to look at my numbers all of the time when I was trying to hit the 100,000 mark. But once I passed that threshold I [stopped looking] because it can become obsessive. I think I’m moving faster than I used to grow on YouTube. So I can see growing pretty significantly this year.
Fort Wayne Ink Spot (FWIS): What has changed for you?
Alexis: I took the position back then where I was doing content that was more effective at growth rate. Knowing how social media works, there’s content that is more effective than others [for that], and then there’s content I like to do that isn’t as effective but I think is more meaningful and really speaks to my heart. Since I got my piece of hardware, I’ve been more focused now on trying to create a good playbook of videos that I want to create this year that’s going to be geared toward meaningful content, that will have more longevity on YouTube.
Just because you collect a lot of subscribers doesn’t mean they’re going to watch all of your content. Sometimes people will subscribe to your channel if they see a video and then they may not watch it again.
This year, I really want to grow my engagement on my channel and put videos out that increase watch time and the value that people feel they’re getting. Things that moms and working women would be interested in.
(FWIS): You’re doing cooking shows now?
Alexis: On Wednesdays. Cooking was never a really big thing for me. I never really loved to cook, but now I’m trying to have fun with it. I like to share recipes with subscribers, and it’s a thing [that connects us]. On Sunday, I do lifestyle-type content, with clothes and beauty. And I’m actually starting a day where I will focus on career content. I want to try and help ten people, take them through getting into a business school and help take them to the next level. I used to do more clothing hauls which were fun and I still do some of that, but I don’t want that to be the main focus on my channel anymore.
