Utopia Opens
New grocery store and restaurant
Utopian Community Grocery & Restaurant opens its doors to the public on the morning of May 15, at 7 am, thus turning a new page in southeast Fort Wayne’s history by providing fresh produce from local farmers and community gardens.
The neighborhoods in the southeast are in a “food desert” as classified by the US Department of Agriculture, sections of a community where people have limited access to affordable and nutritious food. Southeast continues to be plagued with chronic health issues, although several health-related agencies—Neighborhood Health, Alliance Health Centers and the Bowen Center—have stepped up to provide better medical care to residents.
Councilwoman Sharon Tucker told Fort Wayne’s NBC that the grocery store is “the first step towards creating a healthier community.”
“[Knowing] there's a place you can walk and get a healthy meal that means a lot to the community, it means a lot to people,” Tucker said.
