Black Women in History
By Myka A. Williams
Black History month is the celebration of great achievements made in the African American community. We should take some time to recognize the achievements of black women throughout history. These women advanced the game for many successful black women who helped portray black excellence then and now.
Madam C. J. Walker was the first black woman to become a self-made millionaire and changed the hair industry as we know it. With her successful line of hair products, she showed the importance of textured hair care to the world. She paved the way for many women that are making millions and building empires. Well known business woman and entrepreneur, Monique Rodriguez brand, Mielle Organics is being sold worldwide. Her healthy hair and skin care products are promoted in over 87 different countries.
Not only was Alice Coachman the first African American woman to win a gold medal, she was also the first for black women from any country. In 1952, Coachman became a spokesperson for Coca Cola. By becoming the first black female to endorse an international consumer product, she earned more recognition for her achievements. Her own success was an inspiration to many great black Olympians such as, Allison Felix, Simone Biles, Sydney McLaughlin, and Simone Manuel.
Black women have been an important part of medicine in America for a long time. These women faced double discrimination based on both their sex and race.
Alexa Canady, MD wasn’t only a neurosurgeon, but she was the first black woman ever to be one. Going into college with a major in zoology, Canady became interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Her career choice made many doubt her ability to achieve her dream but she refused to give up. She achieved her goals and sparked hope for women in the medical field after her. Just like Alexa, Dr. Jessica Clemons changed the medical field through social media. Her ability to diagnose and treat mental illnesses is creating a better, more efficient future for the healthcare industry.
These are just three of the many phenomenal women that have accomplished many great things from the black community proving that it's not just a man's world, but it’s a black women’s world too.
