Mindful Minds Matter
By Jade Henry
What does it mean to have a healthy mind? Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being are all part of our mental health. It has an impact on the way we think, feel, and act. It also influences how we deal with stress, interact with others, and make decisions. Mental health is vital in all stages of life. The most common category of mental health disorders in America impacts approximately 40 million adults 18 and older. I’m doing all I can now at 14, so I will not be a part of that number!
As much as we don’t like to talk about our minds, it does matter. What matters most is how we can protect our mental health. These are some of the things I do after school, after ballet, or after a long day:
1. Watching silly videos on TikTok or Instagram- Laughter is the best medicine
2. Reading an interesting book or my bible (the girl version I was gifted)
3. Facetiming or calling my family and friends
4. Writing in my gratitude journal
5. Riding my bike
6. Baking my favorite dessert (brownies!!)
7. Learning a new dance
Protecting our mental health also helps us care for our physical health, recognize emotional and spiritual needs, foster, and maintain strong relationships, and achieve balance in different areas of our lives. When the matters of the mind are not cared for, the need for counseling may be necessary. It seems that counselors are all around us- at school, at work, and even at church. Take advantage of talking to a counselor if you feel it’s necessary. After all, it is Mental Health Awareness Month! Check out our listing of mental health counselors available in our city.
Let us always be mindful to make time for ourselves! By committing to regular acts of self -care, it can calm us down and can ensure a good mindset. It’s easy to take care of others and neglect ourselves. This can be true for moms who have active kids like me! So, remember, after a long day at work or school or both, coming home to relax should be a priority. I suggest taking a nap, watching a movie, reading a book, doing yoga, taking a long bath, or simply giving yourself that extra time that you deserve. Being mindful matters!
