“Happy Healthy Holidays" will be held at The Urban League on Friday, Dec 10th from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. This free event is the culmination of a conversation between Dr. Rudy Kachmann, Terra Brantley, CEO of the Urban League, and Kelley Marvin of Inspired Nutrition by Kelley.

Kachmann has spent many years of his career as a neurosurgeon working with patients to reverse diabetes, kidney disease, and other diseases through his work at the Kachmann Mind Body Institute. He sought out Terra Brantley to see how they could collaborate. Meanwhile, Brantley had thought about starting some wellness programs and yoga classes for 2022 at the Urban League facility. Together, along with nutritionist Kelley Marvin who has been working with Dr. Kachman and his patients over the last two years, the idea of "Happy Healthy Holidays" was born.

The group is excited to kick this off in December with plans to continue in the new year with healthy eating and cooking classes as well as yoga.

I sat down briefly with the three of them to get their perspectives on the importance of good food and health.

Kachmann: I am excited to teach wellness to all communities in Fort Wayne! I want the churches and community leaders to be involved, which is why I came to the Urban League only to realize Terra is now running this great organization for the community.

We want people to continue to enjoy their food but with less sugar! These sugar diseases are devastating our communities. The 20-30 diseases that many people get can be prevented if you eat the right foods.

I know what bad food is, my dad owned a deli in New York but over the years, I’ve learned better habits and information.

Marvin: I want this to be practical and inspirational for people to learn about whole foods and nutrition for their bodies. This event will show people new recipes and bring people together as they learn about healthier lifestyle options for their kitchen. I will be speaking on how to eat well and have more energy during the holiday season. We will discuss topics like whole food, carbs, energy drains, vitamins, healthy fats and sugar.

Food is a celebration along with giving energy! This class will expose people to new options and different foods.

Brantley: For the Urban League, I believe this is a great way to kick off the new year with programs for the community. People stop by all the time saying they are glad we are back and can’t wait to see what we are going to do. This focus on healthy eating will help people to reclaim their health as we start the new year! We want to inspire, educate and have fun!

I will use my personal testimony about my own health. Most people don’t believe my age, but I know through exercise and healthy eating I feel more energized and healthier! We will have a limited space of about 12 to 14 people total for social distancing.

Tabitha: How will people find out and register for this event?

Brantley: We will have it on all of our websites as well as social media. We will also have some radio and tv spots. They can call the Urban League to register at 260-745-3100.

Tabitha: Thank you all and I look forward to this amazing collaboration for the community!
