Chi Eta Phi Sorority Nurse’s Day Friendship Tea When: May 6, 2018

The Fort Wayne Chapter of the Chi Eta Phi, professional nurses sorority, hosted an informal tea, to celebrate the start Nurses Week. Previously, the local sorority has celebrated the week with community events, like a fashion show open to the public. This year, the group took a more personal approach and invited inactive and active members, along with nursing students, to a meet-and-greet tea.

“Our number one initiative is infant mortality,” Chapter President Phyllis Bragg said, when asked to describe their community efforts. Fort Wayne sits third highest in the nation for infant mortality cases; the city’s 46803, 46805 and 46806 are most prominent zip codes concerning infant deaths. The sorority teaches safe sleep classes for parents once a month, using the acronym ABC (babies should sleep ALONE, on their BACKS, and in a CRIB).

Chi Eta Phi locally also participates in the annual Black Barbershop initiative, partners with African American healthcare alliance to conduct physicals for Metro Football for over 20 years, and provide blood pressure and health care screenings throughout the community.
